paper dolls

A creative, imaginative toy for over 200 years!  Several resources are available online for virtual play, or turn it into the real deal by printing doll templates on card stock.

Find outfit & accessory inspiration from magazines or fashion websites.  Materials include scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, foil, yarn, ribbon, thread, rhinestones, glitter, markers, & beads.  Make tabs to hold the clothes onto the doll or use scotch tape.

Additional ideas include making a closet with paper or cardboard for storing, opening “stores” with themes then buying & selling with friends, & giving as gifts for parties or to stay in touch with long distance friends.

beet basics

Stuffed (dried apricots, bread crumbs, sage, cream, salt, pepper) grilled pork chops & potatoes, collard greens, & beets

It is time to give away the canned beets.

  • cut off the greens
  • place in covered casserole dish with 1/4 cup stock or water
  • microwave for 12-18 minutes
  • take a paper towel & gently rub off beet skin

Excellent plain, tossed with a vinaigrette, served on a salad, or with turkey & greens on crunchy bread…

diet doctrine

Food & drink have been celebratory mechanisms for gatherings & parties for hundreds of years.  Here’s why it is becoming a problem now:

  • the abundance of accessible food
  • the ready-made processed shelf foods are easy to purchase & serve
  • the caloric content is unrealized (glazed donut = 255 calories)
  • people & parents find it hard to say “no” in a crowd

Well meaning groups contribute to the issue as laid out in the following article:  The Obesity Epidemic in American Churches

Especially concerning to parents ~ Who typically makes a dash for the Sunday morning donuts or the birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas Eve service?…  Maybe we should thank groups for providing plenty of teachable moments.

How about a…

  • produce potluck
  • pedometer party
  • fruity fellowship
  • small plate party

muffin malfunction

Tried a new recipe this morning – Carrot Raisin Bran Muffins from a November 2008 Family Circle

Look pretty good, don’t they?  And this was after my camera strap got caught & the muffins scattered all over the place.

Thinking the 3/4 teaspoon of wheat flour was suspect, I changed it to 3/4 cup.  Although they were smelling a wee bit wheaty (cow feed?), confidence held.

Upon sampling the first dense bite, a “hmmmm” crept into my mind…  Reviewing the process, it occurred to me that the baker left out the oil!  Plus, the baker added WAY too much flour.  whoops.  The accidental metamucil muffin.  Better stick close to home today.

Thank goodness for honey & butter.
